Having moved to the UK from Pakistan at a young age, 23-year-old Fida Rauf chose QMU for its supportive learning environment and proximity to home, enabling a healthier work–life balance.

Drawn to QMU’s MSc Business Analytics with Professional Practice course for its practical focus, she has developed strong analytical and technical skills through hands-on projects using popular high-level programming tools and analytical software.

In today’s increasingly data-driven world, courses like Business Analytics play a vital role in equipping graduates with the skills needed to inform decision-making, solve complex problems, and drive innovation across industries. Her experience highlights the value of applied learning, supportive teaching, and stepping outside one’s comfort zone to build confidence, employability, and a clear pathway towards a future career in analytics and consulting.

Why did you choose to study at QMU?

Being closer to home was an important factor for me, especially after previously commuting up to two hours to university when I was studying at undergraduate level, which I found both time-consuming and exhausting. Having experienced that, I wanted a learning environment that would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and maintain a good work-life balance. QMU’s supportive learning environment reassured me that I would be studying somewhere that values both academic success and student wellbeing.

What interested you about your course?

The course content strongly appealed to me, as the modules were highly relevant and practical, with a clear focus on applying theory to real-world business and analytics problems. I was especially drawn to the opportunity to develop hands-on analytical and technical skills, including learning how to analyse and visualise data using tools such as Python and Power BI.

What do you most enjoy about your course? What has been the highlight so far?

There are many aspects of the course that I’ve really enjoyed, especially the class discussions. They allow us to share different perspectives and help deepen my understanding by applying concepts to real-world business scenarios. A key highlight for me has been working on a Power BI project as part of an assignment, where I created an interactive dashboard to analyse and present data insights. This project was especially rewarding because it allowed me to apply analytical concepts in a practical way and see how data can be transformed into clear, visual insights to support decision-making.

Do you think a knowledge of analytics will be beneficial for future job opportunities?

Absolutely! Developing analytical skills strengthens problem-solving and critical thinking, allowing complex issues to be broken down and evaluated objectively. Even early in your career, skills such as data interpretation and creating dashboards can help you stand out to employers and make a meaningful contribution from the start. These skills become increasingly important in leadership roles as responsibility for strategic decision-making grows. Analytics is also highly transferable across roles and industries, which significantly enhances employability and career flexibility.

How have your lecturers supported your learning?

My lecturers have been extremely supportive throughout the course, consistently offering clear guidance and encouragement. They are approachable and always willing to provide further support, particularly around assignments, whether that’s through detailed feedback, additional explanations, or one-to-one guidance. This support has helped me build confidence in my learning and better understand how to apply concepts effectively.

What has been the most valuable lesson that you have learned at university so far?

Getting involved in new experiences, whether it’s academic projects, extracurricular activities, or work placements - they all helped me develop skills, build confidence, and gain practical insights that I wouldn’t have acquired otherwise. I’ve realised that stepping outside my comfort zone often leads to personal growth and opens doors to opportunities that can shape both my career and university experience.

What do you hope to do with your degree upon graduating?

I hope to use my degree to secure an analyst role in the consulting industry after graduation. Ideally, I would also like roles that offer the potential for travel, as this would allow me to gain exposure to different markets, understand global business practices, and develop a broader perspective on consulting challenges.
